Cosmetic Surgery and Post-operative Sex

Cosmetic surgery patients vary quite a bit. Some are more sexually adventuresome than others. Most however are embarrassed if they come up with the nerve to ask:

"When can we have sex?"

The answer to that question obviously depends a bit upon what you might have had operated and what exactly you want to do. This guide is meant as a very general one specifically for Dr Di Saia's patients. This is not instruction for all patients. ASK YOUR SURGEON FIRST. Some of these points will hopefully seem obvious:

In GENERAL

  • Complete healing from surgery takes months to occur. Early vigorous activity can increase the possibility that things could be moved in position or heal in a way such that you might not be pleased. Early sex after surgery should therefore be gentle. Don't worry. Amazon Jane can come back to the bedroom after she has healed.
  • If it hurts, STOP and get input from your surgeon.
  • In re-operative surgery, you are probably best to wait twice as long or longer before doing anything.
  • Nobody's tongue should touch a surgical site until it is closed and maturing. Never touch an open wound. The human mouth harbors millions of bacteria!
  • If the wound becomes red, swollen or painful, cease sexual activity and get in touch with your surgeon.

Breast Augmentation

  • Gentle sexual activity is probably OK within a week or two.
  • Do not lay or allow anyone to lay across the breasts for at least a month.
  • Laying on your side might be the most comfortable.
  • Nobody's tongue on the wound for at least a month.
  • No direct sexual breast contact for at least six weeks.

Labiaplasty

Labia Minora Reduction - Dr D's Patients Only!
  • Gentle sexual activity may be OK in 4-6 weeks. Dr D should clear you for this.
  • Nobody's tongue on the wound for at least a month after it has closed.
  • First intercourse should be short in duration and lubricated. Ease into it. Ideally Dr D should follow you in the office until you are back to normal. :)

Liposuction

  • Gentle sexual activity is probably OK within a week or two.
  • Do not allow anyone to lay across the surgical site for at least a month.
  • Nobody's tongue on the wound for at least a month after it has closed.

Tummy Tuck

  • Gentle sexual activity is probably OK within a week or two.
  • Do not allow anyone to lay across your tummy for at least a month.
  • Laying on your side might be the most comfortable.
  • Nobody's tongue on the wound for at least a month after it has closed.

For Tummy Tuck patients, a creative post-op patient has the following suggestion:

"I found this very helpful... load up a bunch of pillows, like a huge pile on the side of the bed... a mountain if you can, and just bend over into them slightly. It's like laying on a big cloud, hehehehehe.. um so this would be doggie?? This was very comfy. I'm going to say probably day 11 or so???"
